Before Star Wars was STAR WARS, George Lucas went to Marvel Comics with a deal they probably wish they’d appreciated a little more at the time: publish a comic based on his upcoming movie, pay nothing for the rights, and royalties only kick in after 100,000 copies sold.
Then the first issues sold more than ONE MILLION copies.
Beginning with Roy Thomas and Howard Chaykin, and soon joined by Archie Goodwin and the great Carmine Infantino, Marvel’s Star Wars became the one regular source of new adventures for fans waiting years between movies. Luke, Leia, Han, Vader and company headed beyond the films into new worlds, new characters and some wonderfully wild corners of the early Star Wars universe.
TASCHEN goes back to where it started with the first 23 issues, digitally remastered to clean up the limitations of 1970s printing without sanding away the look and texture of the original comics. They’re collected here in a massive XXL edition, along with an extensive history by comics historian Peter Sanderson.
Early Marvel Star Wars. Thomas. Chaykin. Goodwin. Infantino. Twenty-three issues restored and blown up to ridiculous TASCHEN proportions.
This thing is enormous. As it should be.
